This is an exceptional
Italiante house in the best location in the historic
district of the village of Catskill overlooking the
Hudson River. Carefully restored in the last eight
years, it is ready to move into. There are large
rooms (12 in all plus several on the third floor) with
high ceilings, quality original trim throughout, an
attached greenhouse (your own flower arrangements
all year), front porch, side screened porch, garden, and
lawn.
Catskill is among the finest
villages in the Hudson Valley for quality period homes.
There are over 400 in the East Hill National Register
Historic District (see our poster of 50+ houses, on this
website) and this is one of the best of them all.
Prospect Avenue, overlooking the Hudson River, is the
best location with the best houses in the village.
Architecture:
Judd Olney had this interesting house built about
1855-60 in the Italiante style, but with considerably
more detail and innovation than others. Olney wanted no
ordinary house. It has an unusually high third floor
which affords a warren of small bedrooms. This floor
also projects forward from the front facade to form a
porch-like overhang supported on four tapered square
columns with arches between, forming what the Italians
call a logia, a shaded porch on which to sit and enjoy
the neighborhood, which includes a view of the Hudson
River. The house's orientation is also unusual for it
faces 90 degrees from the street, a compromise between
wishing the facade to be visible from the street yet
also allow a view of the river. The interior is replete
with marble mantles, decorative arches, an attached wing
which was built at the same time creating an unusually
large home. In recent years it has received a
sympathetic restoration, removing the interior additions
of long institutional use to reveal original features.
